INKA and OPI-Roma Partnership: INKA Nursing Classification Research Center, within The Center of Excellence for Nursing Culture and Research (CECRI)

Advancing Nursing Informatics and Clinical Research Through Data

The partnership between INKA (formerly NANDA® International) and Ordine delle Professioni Infermieristiche di ROMA (OPI-Roma) represents a strategic collaboration focused on advancing nursing knowledge through the use of clinical data, informatics, and research within healthcare systems.

This partnership establishes a shared initiative designed to strengthen the use of standardized nursing classifications within electronic health record (EHR) environments and to support the development of nursing knowledge through data-driven research.

Partnership Focus

The collaboration between INKA and OPI-Roma centers on the development of a international collaboration to:

  • Advance nursing knowledge through the use of clinical data
  • Strengthen the integration of standardized nursing classifications in practice and research
  • Promote the use of nursing informatics to support clinical decision-making
  • Improve the visibility and measurement of nursing’s contribution to patient care

This work reflects a growing need within healthcare systems to ensure that nursing knowledge is not only documented, but also structured, retrievable, and usable for research and practice improvement.

This work also supports the generation of high-quality nursing data that strengthens research, classification development, and visibility of nursing clinical judgment within healthcare systems.

Research and Informatics Initiative

At the core of this partnership is the development of a collaborative program focused on:

  • Use of electronic health record data to support clinical research
  • Validation and refinement of nursing diagnoses and classifications
  • Integration of standardized nursing language into clinical systems
  • Development of evidence demonstrating nursing’s impact on patient outcomes

This initiative supports the advancement of diagnosis-centered nursing knowledge through real-world data and clinical application.

Educational and Scholarly Collaboration

The partnership supports a range of educational and scholarly activities, including:

  • Online educational programs focused on nursing informatics and clinical reasoning
  • Biennial conferences that bring together international nursing scholars and practitioners
  • Opportunities for doctoral and post-doctoral engagement and international research collaboration

Through these activities, nurses participate in the development and dissemination of nursing knowledge while strengthening expertise in informatics and research.

International Integration and Collaboration

The OPI-Roma partnership is designed to work in coordination with INKA’s broader network of academic and research collaborations, including the Dr. Marjory Gordon Program for Clinical Reasoning and Knowledge Development at Boston College.

This integrated model supports:

  • Cross-center collaboration and exchange of scholars
  • Joint research initiatives and dialogue
  • Development of international expertise in nursing knowledge and informatics

By connecting academic scholarship with clinical data and informatics, the partnership strengthens the global advancement of nursing knowledge.

Role Within INKA

The partnership with OPI-Roma expands INKA’s capacity to:

  • Advance nursing knowledge through clinical data and informatics
  • Support research using standardized nursing classifications
  • Strengthen integration of nursing knowledge within healthcare systems
  • Build international capacity for data-driven nursing research

Through this collaboration, INKA continues to extend its global work in defining, applying, and advancing diagnosis-centered nursing knowledge across practice, research, and health systems.
