Overview

The International Journal of Nursing Knowledge is an essential scholarly resource for nurses and healthcare professionals committed to clarifying and advancing the knowledge base of nursing. The Journal is dedicated to strengthening nursing’s disciplinary identity through research-supported standardized nursing language, improved diagnostic reasoning, and global consistency in nursing practice and documentation.

Aims and Scope

The International Journal of Nursing Knowledge, the official journal of INKA, is a peer-reviewed publication for key professionals committed to discovering, understanding, and disseminating nursing knowledge.

The Journal aims to clarify the knowledge base of nursing to improve health outcomes. Its focus is on the development and dissemination of research-supported standardized nursing languages and the promotion of their clinical use.

It seeks to articulate nursing’s unique disciplinary focus and contributions to the care of people through:

  • Improvement of nursing assessment
  • Advancement of clinical reasoning
  • Strengthening diagnostic judgment skills
  • Ensuring global consistency in nursing knowledge frameworks

The Journal is an essential information resource for healthcare professionals concerned with developing nursing knowledge and standardized nursing languages in nursing practice, research, education, and policy.

The Journal accepts papers with an international focus that contribute significantly to new nursing knowledge, including:

  • Concept analyses
  • Original and applied research
  • Review articles
  • Historical perspectives

All papers seeking consideration for publication must clearly articulate the contributions of the work to the advancement of nursing knowledge development.

Supporting the Journal is a board of international experts who ensure that only the most current and comprehensive research is published to improve nursing knowledge and the development of standardized nursing language internationally.

International Governance and Naming History

INKA’s work is grounded in a long-standing commitment to developing and disseminating nursing knowledge internationally.

Originally established as the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, the organization formally expanded its scope to become a global professional association in 2002, adopting the name NANDA International, Inc. to reflect its international mission and reach.

The name “NANDA” has been retained because of its strong recognition within the nursing profession. Today, it is best understood as an established brand identifier rather than an acronym for the organization’s original name.

In April 2026, NANDA International became the International Nursing Knowledge Association (INKA). Under this name, INKA continues to publish and advance both the NANDA and NANDA 360 classifications.

For accuracy and consistency, we respectfully request that authors and readers do not refer to the organization as the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (or the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association International), except when discussing historical developments prior to 2002. This earlier name does not reflect INKA’s international scope and is not the legal name of the Association.

Standardized Terminology Citation Guidance

To support clarity across languages and ensure consistency in scholarly communication, authors referencing terms from standardized nursing classifications are asked to include the corresponding code the first time a term appears in a manuscript.

For example:

Impaired physical mobility (00085)

This practice supports translation accuracy and helps readers internationally identify the exact term being discussed and locate the equivalent concept in their own language editions.
