Advancing Nursing Knowledge Through Education

The Institute of Nursing Knowledge is the educational arm of INKA (formerly NANDA® International), dedicated to advancing nursing knowledge and strengthening clinical reasoning across practice, education, research, and digital health environments.

The Institute brings together educational programs, courses, and learning experiences that support the development and application of assessment-driven, diagnosis-centered nursing knowledge. Through this work, the Institute helps ensure that the knowledge underlying nursing practice is clearly defined, consistently applied, and effectively integrated into healthcare systems worldwide.

Why Education Matters

Nursing knowledge doesn’t advance through research and classification development alone. It must also be understood, taught, and applied in practice.

Across healthcare environments, nurses are expected to assess complex patient situations, make clinical judgments, and deliver care that is both individualized and evidence-informed. However, without structured preparation, the knowledge that supports these decisions can be applied inconsistently, limiting its impact on patient care, education, and research.

Education is therefore essential to:

  • Strengthening clinical reasoning and diagnostic judgment
  • Supporting consistent use of nursing knowledge in practice
  • Enabling meaningful documentation and communication of care
  • Preparing nurses to work effectively within digital and data-driven health systems

The Institute of Nursing Knowledge exists to support this work.

Educational Focus

Education within the Institute is grounded in a shared understanding of how nursing knowledge is developed and applied.

This includes:

  • Assessment-driven clinical reasoning, in which patient assessment informs clinical judgment
  • Diagnosis-centered nursing knowledge, where nursing diagnoses provide a structured representation of patient needs
  • Integration across the nursing process, linking diagnoses with patient goals and outcomes and nursing actions
  • Structured knowledge for practice and systems, supporting documentation, communication, and data use across healthcare environments

Through this approach, the Institute supports the development of knowledge that is visible, teachable, and usable across settings.

Programs and Learning Opportunities

The Institute of Nursing Knowledge includes a range of educational offerings designed to support nurses, educators, researchers, informaticists, and health system leaders at different stages of professional development.

NANDA 360 Institute

The NANDA 360 Institute is a foundational program focused on the application and implementation of the NANDA 360 expanded classification and clinical reasoning framework.

This program prepares participants to understand, apply, and operationalize diagnosis-centered nursing knowledge within clinical practice, education, research, and digital health systems.

Additional Educational Offerings (in development)

The Institute will expand to include online courses and learning experiences focused on:

  • Nursing diagnoses and diagnostic reasoning
  • Development of clinical reasoning across levels of practice
  • Integration of standardized nursing classifications into education and practice
  • Application of nursing knowledge within electronic health records and digital systems
  • Use of structured nursing data in research and quality improvement

These offerings will support both foundational learning and advanced application across diverse roles and settings.

Educational Approach

Programs within the Institute are designed to support both conceptual understanding and practical application.

Learning methods may include:

  • Interactive lectures and seminars
  • Case-based reasoning and applied exercises
  • Simulation and scenario-based learning
  • Collaborative and interdisciplinary learning environments

This approach reflects the complexity of nursing practice and supports the development of clinical reasoning in real-world contexts.

Global Development

The Institute of Nursing Knowledge is designed as a global initiative.

Programs will be delivered through a combination of in-person and digital formats, with expansion across regions aligned with INKA’s international network, academic partnerships, and implementation leaders.

This model supports:

  • Consistency in educational content and standards
  • Adaptation to local and regional contexts
  • Development of regional educators and trainers
  • Global dissemination of diagnosis-centered nursing knowledge

Role Within INKA

The Institute of Nursing Knowledge plays a central role in INKA’s mission to advance nursing knowledge worldwide.

It ensures that:

  • Nursing knowledge is not only developed, but also understood and applied
  • Clinical reasoning remains grounded in clearly defined professional knowledge
  • Standardized nursing classifications are used consistently and responsibly
  • Education supports the effective integration of nursing knowledge into practice, education, research, and health systems
  • Through the Institute, INKA connects the development of nursing knowledge with its real-world application, strengthening both the science and practice of nursing.
