Preparing for NANDA® 360: How Nurses Around the World Will Learn the Next Generation of Nursing Knowledge

One of the questions we hear most often is:

“How will I learn NANDA 360?”

It is an important question, and one we have been preparing to answer from the very beginning.

As the International Nursing Knowledge Association (INKA) prepares for the launch of NANDA® 360 in 2027, one thing has become increasingly clear: transforming nursing practice requires more than publishing new content. It requires a shared understanding of how nursing knowledge is intended to be applied.

That is why INKA established the NANDA 360 Institute; the educational arm of NANDA 360.

Why We Created the NANDA 360 Institute

For decades, nurses around the world have relied on NANDA nursing diagnoses as a foundational component of clinical reasoning and patient care. Over time, however, we have observed that as nursing knowledge is taught, adapted, and reinterpreted across educational programs, healthcare organizations, electronic health record vendors, publications, and consulting groups, the original evidence and intent can become diluted.

The result is variation in teaching, inconsistencies in implementation, and unnecessary confusion for learners, educators, clinicians, and healthcare organizations.

As NANDA 360 evolved into an integrated nursing knowledge base that combines an expanded classification with a clinical reasoning framework, connecting assessment, diagnoses, patient goals and outcomes, and nursing actions across the nursing process, it became clear that education needed to evolve alongside it.

The NANDA 360 Institute was created to ensure that nurses, educators, researchers, informaticians, healthcare leaders, policymakers, and students develop a common understanding of NANDA 360 and its intended application.

Why NANDA 360 Requires a Different Educational Approach

Traditional nursing education often teaches assessment, nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes as separate concepts.

NANDA 360 brings these components together into a single, connected system that supports assessment-driven, diagnosis-centered clinical reasoning.

Rather than viewing each component independently, learners develop an understanding of how patient assessment findings drive the entire nursing process. Assessment data are synthesized into nursing judgments (nursing diagnoses), inform patient goals and outcome indicators, and guide the selection of individualized nursing actions. While nursing diagnoses remain central to clinical reasoning, NANDA 360 recognizes that nursing actions should be guided by the patient’s assessment findings and desired outcomes, not by the diagnosis in isolation. This creates a more integrated, patient-centered approach that reflects the dynamic relationships among assessment, nursing diagnoses, patient goals and outcomes, and nursing actions.

This integrated approach helps learners:

  • Develop stronger clinical reasoning skills.
  • Apply standardized nursing language more consistently in one integrated classification.
  • Understand the evidence supporting nursing decisions and actions.
  • Better demonstrate nursing’s contribution to patient outcomes and healthcare system performance.

Teaching an integrated system requires an integrated educational strategy. That is the role of the NANDA 360 Institute.

A Global Education Strategy

Education on NANDA 360 will be introduced in phases as we prepare for its anticipated release in 2027.

Phase One: Building Global Leadership

The inaugural NANDA 360 Institute will take place this August in Italy.

For this first Institute, INKA has invited a select group of nursing leaders in health policy, administration, and international leadership positions to explore the rationale behind NANDA 360 and the opportunities it creates for the future of nursing knowledge.

Participants will examine how NANDA 360 can strengthen the visibility of nursing’s contribution to patient outcomes and healthcare system performance through its application in policy, education, clinical practice, research, and the use of nursing data.

This inaugural Institute represents the beginning of a much broader global initiative.

Phase Two: Expanding Education

Following the inaugural Institute, future educational opportunities will be developed for educators in universities, healthcare systems, and other organizations preparing for the implementation of NANDA 360.

The Institute is also developing online courses and educational resources that will support the 2027 release, helping learners understand both the integrated nursing knowledge base and its application in practice.

Building a Global Network of NANDA 360 Institute Faculty

One of the most exciting aspects of the NANDA 360 Institute is the development of a global educational network.

Rather than relying on multiple interpretations of NANDA 360 as it spreads around the world, INKA intends to prepare educators through a structured pathway to become NANDA 360 Institute Faculty.

These educators will receive advanced preparation directly from INKA and will become recognized experts capable of delivering authoritative education on NANDA 360 within their regions and native languages.

This approach helps ensure that nurses around the world receive education that reflects the evidence, structure, and intended application of NANDA 360 while also creating opportunities for regional leadership and collaboration.

How You Can Prepare

NANDA 360 is currently in development and is not yet available for implementation or general access. It is anticipated to launch in 2027 in two formats:

  • A licensed, web-based integrated nursing knowledge base.
  • An expanded classification, available as both a printed publication and digital access.

If you are an educator interested in becoming part of our future train-the-trainer program and the global network of NANDA 360 Institute Faculty, we invite you to submit your curriculum vitae to asknanda@nanda.org.

Looking Ahead

NANDA 360 represents more than the next evolution of nursing knowledge. It represents a new way of connecting nursing knowledge across the nursing process through an integrated nursing knowledge base, expanded classification, and clinical reasoning framework.

Preparing the global nursing community for this evolution requires more than new content. It requires a shared understanding, consistent education, and a worldwide network of educators committed to advancing nursing knowledge with rigor, confidence, and integrity.

That is the purpose of the NANDA 360 Institute.

We look forward to welcoming nurses, educators, researchers, and healthcare leaders from around the world as we prepare for the launch of NANDA 360 in 2027.
