Supporting Inclusive Nursing Knowledge and Classification

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee is a standing committee of INKA (formerly NANDA ® International) dedicated to ensuring that the NANDA-I nursing diagnosis classification, and the NANDA 360 classifications, and related educational resources reflect the needs of individuals and communities who have historically been underserved or underrepresented in healthcare systems.

Nursing care is grounded in holistic clinical reasoning, including attention to biopsychosocial and spiritual well-being. To support nurses globally, standardized nursing classification content must be inclusive, evidence-based, and responsive to the full range of human health experiences across populations and settings.

The Diversity & Inclusion Committee works to strengthen the classifications and INKA educational products so that they support equitable nursing assessment, judgment, and documentation for all individuals, including those who may otherwise be overlooked in healthcare environments.

Committee Responsibilities

The duties of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring that the NANDA-I classification and NANDA 360 classifications address the needs of underserved and underrepresented communities, including racial, ethnic, and LGBTQ+ populations, in relation to biopsychosocial and spiritual well-being.
  • Contributing to the development and review of INKA educational materials to ensure they are inclusive, culturally responsive, and relevant to diverse nursing care contexts.
  • Supporting global recognition of nursing’s role in addressing health issues that have direct or indirect impact on underserved or underrepresented communities through the use of validated NANDA 360 classifications and standardized nursing knowledge.

Through this work, the Committee helps ensure that standardized nursing classifications support clinical practice, education, research, and informatics in ways that reflect the diversity of individuals and communities served by nurses worldwide.
