Supporting Excellence in Nursing Scholarship: IJNK’s Transition to SAGE Publishing

Filter by Category

The International Journal of Nursing Knowledge is a core scholarly outlet through which NANDA®-I advances nursing science, supports evidence-based practice, and disseminates rigorously reviewed research worldwide. Through the journal, researchers share innovations, clinicians access scholarship, and nursing knowledge is strengthened across global contexts.

Because of the journal’s central role in NANDA-I’s mission, the Association takes seriously its responsibility to ensure that the journal is supported by a publishing partner capable of meeting the needs of today’s scholarly community. To support the journal’s continued growth, visibility, and long-term success, NANDA-I periodically reviews its publishing partnerships. Following a deliberate and comprehensive evaluation, NANDA-I is pleased to announce that we have selected SAGE Publishing as the new publishing home for the International Journal of Nursing Knowledge.

This transition reflects our commitment to ensuring that authors, reviewers, editors, and readers receive the highest level of support, responsiveness, and global reach, while preserving the journal’s scholarly integrity and editorial standards.

A Thoughtful and Deliberate Review Process

One of the responsibilities of the NANDA-I Board of Directors is to regularly review our publishing partnerships. For the journal, this occurs every two contract cycles to ensure we remain positioned with the publisher best aligned to our needs, values, and long-term goals.

As part of this review, the Board and leadership team gathered input from multiple stakeholders. This included feedback from our Journal Editor, Dr. Jane Flanagan, who oversees the journal’s day-to-day operations, as well as insights from authors and reviewers about their submission and review experiences. We also consulted editors of other nursing journals to better understand publisher performance across the field.

Professional forums such as the International Academy of Nursing Editors (IANE) conference played an important role in this process, allowing Dr. Flanagan to engage directly with editorial colleagues and assess the strengths and challenges of various publishers.

The Tender and Selection Process

Following this assessment, NANDA-I formally “went out to tender.” A detailed Request for Proposals (RFP) was developed, outlining the Association’s priorities: editorial support, marketing and visibility, digital publishing capabilities, financial models, and a shared long-term vision for the journal’s growth.

A review committee composed of Dr. Flanagan, members of the Board of Directors, and NANDA-I’s CEO carefully evaluated all proposals. Shortlisted publishers were invited to present, allowing the committee to ask questions, compare approaches, and assess strategic alignment. After thorough review and discussion, the committee recommended the publisher that offered the strongest combination of quality, value, and mission fit.

In this most recent cycle, SAGE Publishing emerged as the best fit for NANDA-I at this time.

What This Means for Members

The transition to SAGE has been carefully planned to ensure continuity and minimal disruption.

  1. A Familiar Experience for Authors and Reviewers

Submission and peer-review workflows will remain largely unchanged. Most authors and reviewers will notice little difference in their day-to-day interactions with the journal.

  1. Stronger Editorial Support

SAGE is widely recognized for its responsiveness and collaborative approach with scholarly editors, helping ensure efficient, timely, and well-supported editorial operations.

  1. Expanded Global Reach

With SAGE’s extensive international network and marketing infrastructure, the International Journal of Nursing Knowledge is well positioned to grow its global readership and attract high-quality submissions from diverse research communities.

  1. Continued Commitment to Quality

While the publisher is changing, the journal’s mission, editorial leadership, and peer-review rigor remain the same. This partnership supports our longstanding commitment to excellence.

Looking Ahead

Following contract negotiations, a detailed transition plan was developed, and preparations are now almost completed. The journal will officially move from Wiley to SAGE this month. Members should watch their email for additional information on accessing the journal through our new publisher.

We believe this change positions the journal to continue serving its community effectively and supports NANDA-I’s long-term strategic goals of advancing nursing knowledge, strengthening our scholarly community, and ensuring that the International Journal of Nursing Knowledge continues to thrive in an evolving publishing landscape.
